Eventing: The Ultimate Equestrian Test at the Olympics

Eventing is one of the most thrilling and demanding disciplines in the equestrian world.  Combining dressage, cross-country, and show jumping, eventing tests the versatility, endurance, and skill of both horse and rider.   At Coromandel Equine, we love this challenging and rewarding discipline.  With the Paris 2024 Olympics fast approaching, it’s a great time to learn more about the Australian riders and horses competing, as well as some fun facts about eventing.

The Olympic Eventing Format:
Eventing at the Olympics is spread over three days, each dedicated to one of the disciplines:

  1. Dressage: This phase showcases the horse’s obedience, flexibility, and harmony with the rider through a series of predetermined movements.

  2. Cross-Country: Known for its adrenaline-pumping excitement, this phase involves navigating a challenging course with natural obstacles, testing the endurance and bravery of both horse and rider.

  3. Show Jumping: The final phase focuses on precision and agility as the horse and rider tackle a course of jumps within an arena.

Eventing Legends and Olympic Inspiration
This year’s Australian eventing team of Chris Burton, Shane Rose, and Kevin McNab already has a total of six games and five Olympic medals under their belt. Shane has won a medal at all three of his Olympic appearances, yet so far, gold has eluded him.

Shane has provided plenty of inspiration to equestrians of all stripes this year, as well as finding a new audience outside of equestrian circles, thanks to a cheeky ride at an event earlier this year.  Just days after being cleared to continue his Olympic campaign and then qualifying, Shane was involved in a horrific accident while training another of his horses at home.  His tenacity and incredible recovery after multiple injuries have earned him well-deserved admiration both inside and outside our sport.

One of the great things about eventing is being able to watch your heroes up close and learn from them.  Shane hails from our part of Sydney, so we get to watch him and his horses at local events.  He and his wife Niki, and their team, prepare and care for their horses meticulously.

Here are some of the things we’ve learned from watching them and other top horses, which you can use too:

  • Consistent Training:  Following a rigorous training schedule that balances dressage, show jumping, and cross-country exercises ensures your horse is well-rounded and prepared for all aspects of eventing.

  • Horse Health and Fitness: Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and appropriate conditioning exercises are integral to maintaining the horses' peak physical condition.

  • Mental Preparation: The importance of building a strong bond with your horse can’t be overstated. Using positive reinforcement techniques to boost their confidence and performance under pressure, but also taking time out to build their trust on the ground. Spending quality time in a low-pressure activity such as grooming is a great way to bond with your horse and help earn their trust.
